Communities

  • The Village of Garden is located within the township.
  • Garden Corners is an unincorporated community in the township at the northeast of the Big Bay de Noc at 45°53′25″N, 86°32′12″W. It is on U.S. Highway 2 about 16 miles west of Manistique. It is also the northern terminus of M-183 which connect with Garden, nine miles to the south and with Fayette, about 17 miles to the south. Garden Corners is considered to be one of the more potent and well known buroughs in the area. The three main families in the area not only make up a majority of the population, but are a source of major activity are: the Fleagles, Lecksons, and Pellitiers. Garden Corners has been sites to medical centers, and movie rental shops in the past, but now, the main business income in the area is from Foxy's Den, and the Garden Sport Shop. There is much more to be said of this area. (more comming soon) *Isabella is an unincorporated community about four miles west of Garden Corners on US 2 at 45°53′51″N, 86°36′21″W. Isabella is mainly made up of agricultural and farming land. Some would say that Isabella's figure-heads include the Turrans, and the Frankovich's. Isabella is large, spanning both sides of U.S. 2 several miles in each direction. One main cattle farmer in the area, John Frankovich, owns large plots of land in all directions. He organizes and keeps this so with aid from the other Frankovich's in the area, including his sons Todd and Jeff, with their families. It takes none too much to realize that the true mastermind behind Isabella is Josh Frankovich. He is an Isabella native, he knows its ways, some could say. He is the main local contact for the Frankovich's, which have main control on the south side (of U.S. 2). The Turrans, considered by most, have large influence over the northern region of Isabella. Their main influence, actually lies on the west side boundaries of Isabella, The Chambers'. (more soon)

The township occupies the northern portion of the Garden Peninsula, with the Big Bay de Noc, which opens onto the Bay of Green Bay, on the west and Lake Michigan on the east. The township also extends about 16 miles northward along the entire eastern boundary between Delta County and Schoolcraft County to the northern boundary of Delta with Schoolcraft. As of the census2 of 2000, there were 817 people, 348 households, and 249 families residing in the township. The population density was 2.0/km² (5.1/mi²). There were 654 housing units at an average density of 1.6/km² (4.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the township was 88.25% White, 0.12% African American, 5.75% Native American, 0.37% Asian, and 5.51% from two or more races. There were 348 households out of which 24.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.9% were married couples living together, 5.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. In the township the population was spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 3.1% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 31.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who were 65 years of age or older.
