As a member of a newly formed group of Welsh actors he appeared in The Joneses at the Strand Theatre in London and, in early 1914, sailed for America, where the group were to perform Change by J. O. Film career His earlier screen work was with Clara Kimball Young in Eyes of Youth, Marguerite Clark in Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch. He was teamed with Viola Dana in The Chorus Girl’s Romance, and was with Famous Players-Lasky Corporation, in Sentimental Tommy, the picture which attracted immediate attention to his ability. Over the next twelve years Gareth appeared in thirty-eight motion pictures. Gareth’s film career peaked in the early to mid 1920s. He worked with many great directors and stars but, by 1923, starring roles were turning into cameos in good films such as Enemies of Women and The Spanish Dancer, and then, toward the end of the 1920s, to starring and lesser roles in poor, low budget films. In the late 1920's his film career was waning and, in 1929, the Wall Street Crash wiped out Gareth's wealth. Remarkably, although the thirties were dark years for him, Gareth managed to face his losses. He lost his savings, his property and his closest friend, but survived with his rare book collection intact. Later Hughes moved into the Motion Picture Country Home, in Woodland Hills. There he had his own cottage and acted as an unofficial chaplain, baptising and burying former colleagues, including former silent film actress Clara Kimball Young. His health was deteriorating, though, and he spent more and more time in the Home's hospital. He had lint on the lungs caused by sorting second-hand clothes for the Paiutes and needed regular treatment in an oxygen tent. There he died at the age of seventy, and his cremains were buried in a Masonic Cemetery at Reno.
