Garfield's Halloween Adventure (originally titled "Garfield in Disguise") is the fourth half-hour animated special based on the Garfield comic strip and the first Garfield holiday special. Unlike the previous specials, this is the first that was based on an original story rather than borrowing plot elements from the strip. It features the voice and music talent common in Garfield animated specials including Lorenzo Music (the voice of Garfield) and Lou Rawls (provides the songs). The special premiered in 1985 and continued the winning streak of Emmy award winning Garfield specials. Storyline
Garfield is awakened by the Binky the Clown Show and learns that today is a special day for getting candy: Halloween. Garfield enlists Odie's help hoping to get twice as much candy for himself. They head to the attic and find some pirate costumes. Soon they are out trick-or-treating amongst other children in the neighborhood. Eventually they have gone through the entire neighborhood but Garfield wants more. He notices more houses across the river so he and Odie take a boat to get to the other side. They end up losing the oars and getting lost down the river until they stop at a small port. There is a haunted house nearby and naturally they go in. They come across a creepy old man in a chair who tells them that pirate ghosts are coming to reclaim a hidden treasure they hid inside the house 100 years ago on Halloween night. Before Garfield and Odie could decide on leaving the old man runs off in the boat... with their candy still inside! Soon it's midnight and Garfield and Odie hide. They are found by the pirate ghosts. With no other choice Garfield and Odie run out of house and jump into the river. Garfield is near drowning as they try to escape but Odie helps him to shore. They are wet and miserable until they happily find their boat with the candy still inside and untouched. They go home and Garfield rewards Odie's rescue by giving him his share of the Halloween candy. The book adaptation implies that the old man himself is also a ghost, and their boat is merely pulled away by the current. Also, an extra sequence is included in which Garfield takes a ring from the treasure and is followed home by the pirate ghosts, until he returns the ring.
