Garnet is the princess of Alexandria -- one of three major nations located on Gaia's (the world in which Final Fantasy IX takes place) Mist Continent -- and the only heir to the royal throne. When Queen Brahne (Garnet's mother) begins to express erratic behavior, Garnet plots to escape to Alexandria's neighboring nation of Lindblum to seek help from her uncle, Regent Cid, by stowing away on board the Theatre Ship scheduled to arrive at Alexandria on January 15th (Garnet's birthday) carrying actors trained to perform 'I Want To Be Your Canary' , Garnet's favorite play. Unfortunately, Garnet's intentions are not only uncovered by the actors on board the Theatre Ship (who are actually attempting to abduct her), but by castle security as well, putting an enormous dent in her plans. "When the princess is kidnapped by Zidane and Tantalus, she decides to use the opportunity to travel the world and learn more about her latent powers. To keep a low profile while away from the castle, she adopts the alias, 'Dagger.' Her friends use this nickname fondly. Dagger attacks with either rackets or rods, but her true power lies in her use of White Magic." It has been suggested that Necron (Final Fantasy IX) be merged into this article or section. ...

During her travels, Garnet arrives at Madain Sari, the "Village of Summoners" located on the Outer Continent of Gaia. Upon revisiting Madain Sari a second time, Garnet hears somebody other than herself singing "Melodies of Life" -- a song only she knows, and whose origins are unknown -- and has a flashback of her and another woman fleeing from Madain Sari by boat during a severe storm. Garnet's flashback reveals to her the reason why she has no memory of her life in Alexandria before the age of six, provides her with an explanation for the nightmare she'd had of her and another woman (who she now realizes is her birth mother) on a boat during a storm, and also explains why she is capable of using white magic and Eidolons (Final Fantasy IX's summon beasts) - two abilities associated with Summoners. As it turns out, Alexandria is not Garnet's place of birth, Queen Brahne and the King of Alexandria are not her real parents, and Garnet is not the real princess of Alexandria - Madain Sari is her birthplace, and both of her biological parents are dead. When Garnet consults Doctor Tot (her former tutor) about the matter, Tot explains the situation in detail. Apparently, Doctor Tot found a child (Garnet) on Alexandria Harbor in a wrecked ship near her deceased mother. Coincidentally, the child looked almost identical to Alexandria's former Princess Garnet, who had died shortly beforehand due to illness; there was only one exception: the child had a horn. As an alternative to publicly announcing the death of Alexandria's beloved Princess, the King of Alexandria ordered the child's horn be removed and transformed the child into a sort of "replacement" princess. Recent History The King of Alexandria passed away sometime before the beginning of the game, leaving Queen Brahne in complete control of Alexandria, and leaving Garnet as the single heir to the throne. Shortly before the beginning of the game, a sinister man known as Kuja appeared in the Castle; ever since Kuja's initial arrival at Alexandria Castle, Queen Brahne's behavior began to shift from her normal, caring personality into a new, frightful attitude which persuades Garnet to develop a plan to run away and seek help outside of the Castle walls: Regent Cid in Lindblum. Present
Garnet on her sixteenth birthday. The game begins on January 15, 1800, Garnet's sixteenth birthday, when Garnet plans to carry out her escape plan and flee Alexandria Castle by means of the Theatre Ship scheduled to perform the play 'I Want To Be Your Canary' at Garnet's birthday celebration. Ironically, the "performers" on board the ship are actually a group known as Tantalus, an infamous band of thieves, who were hired by Regent Cid himself to abduct the Princess and bring her to Lindblum. Unfortunately, when Tantalus attempts to kidnap Garnet and Garnet attempts to be kidnapped at the same time, castle security discovers the intentions of both parties, and both plans for escape/abduction go less smoothly than expected. However, Garnet still manages to reach her uncle Cid in Lindblum, who is of less service than Garnet had hoped he would be, causing her to go to further lengths than expected in order to reverse the transformation of her mother's behavior. To Garnet's surprise, her journey to Lindblum becomes much larger than expected, and Garnet finds herself traveling around the world, and even leaving Gaia and visiting Terra, an entirely different planet, throughout her journey. However, Garnet's journey eventually becomes more than just an attempt to help her mother, as the game progresses she falls in love with Zidane who she found to be annoying at the beginning. She finally admits their feelings are mutual on Disc 3. Garnet eventually continues her journey for her own benefits - one of very few actions she takes for her own development and satisfaction.
