Garoowe has a population of approximately between 50.000 and 70.000 and is the third largest city in the region after Boosaaso and Gaalkacyo. The prominent clans in Garoowe are Hassan Ugaas (sub-clan of Dhulbahante) & Isse Mahamud (sub-clan of Majeerteen). It is located in the geographical centre of Puntland and is transversed by the north-south Somali highway. The presence of the highway has allowed for an economic boom to take place^{[citation needed]} which has transformed it from a small rural town to a medium-sized city.
