Garoowe has a population of approximately between 50.000 and 70.000 and is the third largest city in the region after Boosaaso and Gaalkacyo. The prominent clans in Garoowe are Hassan Ugaas (sub-clan of Dhulbahante) & Isse Mahamud (sub-clan of Majeerteen). It is located in the geographical centre of Puntland and is transversed by the north-south Somali highway. The presence of the highway has allowed for an economic boom to take place[citation needed] which has transformed it from a small rural town to a medium-sized city. The city is strategically located between the trans vice highway connecting major cities south and north somalia. At least four people were killed and four others wounded when fighting broke out in Garoowe, the regional capital of the self-declared autonomous region of Puntland, northeastern Somalia, a local journalist told IRIN on Monday [14 January].
Garoowe was calm on Monday, even though tension remained high, the sources said.
