Garry Lewis Templeton (born March 24, 1956 in Lockney, Texas) was a Major League Baseball player for the St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres, and New York Mets from 1976 to 1991. Templeton was primarily a shortstop with good batting numbers in an era when that position did not provide much offense. The Padres acquired him in a trade for Ozzie Smith at the end of the 1981 season for precisely this reason. Unfortunately, Smith developed into a better hitter with the Cardinals than he had been with the Padres, and was much better defensively than Templeton. As a result, Templeton is unfairly maligned for being part of a what was considered a lopsided trade.
