Gary Nathanial Matthews Jr. (born August 25, 1974 in San Francisco, California) is a Major League Baseball player with the Texas Rangers. Matthews is the son of Gary Matthews, who was also a Major League Baseball player in the 1970's and 1980's. Jr. is not nearly as good of a hitter as his father was, but he has been an excellent defensive outfielder. He began his career with the San Diego Padres in 1999 and has also played for the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets, and Baltimore Orioles before his current tenure with the Rangers.
