Playing career

Smith won the Memorial Cup with the Toronto Marlboros (now known as the Guelph Storm, not to be confused with the current AHL Toronto Marlies franchise) in goal in 1964. Entering the NHL he earned the nickname Suitcase Smith because of the large number of teams he played for. His first success was sharing the Vezina Trophy with Tony Esposito when he played with the Chicago Black Hawks. In 1974-75, he also had a great season with the Vancouver Canucks with 72 games played and six shutouts. In 1979, when he was in the World Hockey Association, he led the Winnipeg Jets to an Avco World Trophy championship. He also played for many other teams including the California Golden Seals.
