Wilkinson turned professional in 1987, and climbed the rankings to reach the number five spot within four years, but he failed to live up to his early promise, and never won a ranking tournament.

Wilkinson ended the campaign with a fall of 12 places on the ranking list to No 56.
Beaten 9-8 by Davis in the semi-finals of the 1989 UK Championship and 10-9 by Stephen Hendry in the final of the British Open in 1991, Wilkinson was ranked as high as fifth in the world during the 1991-92 season.
