Garza County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 4,872. Its county seat is Post6. Garza is named for a pioneer Bexar County family, as it was once a part of that county.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,321 km˛ (896 mi˛). 2,319 km˛ (896 mi˛) of it is land and 2 km˛ (1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.07% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,872 people, 1,663 households, and 1,217 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km˛ (5/mi˛). There are 1,928 housing units at an average density of 1/km˛ (2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 74.75% White, 4.80% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 17.12% from other races, and 3.00% from two or more races. 37.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,663 households out of which 36.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.50% are married couples living together, 11.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.80% are non-families. 23.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.15.


In the county, the population is spread out with 28.00% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 21.30% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 112.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 111.30 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $27,206, and the median income for a family is $31,173. Males have a median income of $26,604 versus $18,105 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,704. 22.30% of the population and 17.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.60% of those under the age of 18 and 18.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
