Gasconade is a city located in Gasconade County, Missouri. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 267.


Geography

Gasconade is located at 38°40'15" North, 91°33'33" West (38.670790, -91.559140)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²). 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 267 people, 105 households, and 72 families residing in the city. The population density is 490.9/km² (1,280.5/mi²). There are 141 housing units at an average density of 259.2/km² (676.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.63% White, 0.00% African American, 0.75% Native American, 1.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.50% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 105 households out of which 23.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.6% are married couples living together, 16.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.04.


In the city the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 22.8% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 81.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.2 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $27,404, and the median income for a family is $27,917. Males have a median income of $22,045 versus $18,594 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,131. 25.4% of the population and 19.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 40.5% of those under the age of 18 and 13.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

At that time and in 1821 when Missouri was admitted as the 24th state, Gasconade County, was one of only 25 Missouri counties and one of the largest consisting of a large part of the southern half of Missouri.
The present Gasconade County, slightly smaller than the average Missouri county was established by the legislature in 1869.
Gasconade County, a third class county, is approximately 15 miles in width, 36 miles in length, and consists of 510 square miles or 325,400 acres.The first settlers came to the area of what is now Gasconade County in about 1812.

When Missouri was admitted as the 24th state in 1821, Gasconade County was one of only 25 Missouri counties.
The first county seat was Gasconade City, a site selected by Daniel M. Boone, son of the famous pioneer, and one of the Commissioners of the Territorial Legislature.
However, Gasconade City was located near the mouth of the Gasconade River, which frequently flooded the town.
