Tropical Storm Gaston - definition of Tropical Storm Gaston in Encyclopedia (5563 words)
At 10am EDT (1400 UTC) on August 29, Gaston made landfall on the coast of Bulls Bay, South Carolina, near the towns of McClellanville and Awendaw.
Gaston moved north over land, weakening to a tropical depression but still bringing torrential rain to central Virginia where at least 5 people were reported killed in the ensuing floods.
Late on August 30, as Tropical Depression Gaston crossed Chesapeake Bay, its winds strengthened, and it was again classified as a tropical storm.

Gaston strengthened slightly as it continued to accelerate to the east-northeast, before becoming extratropical south of the Canadian Maritimes at 1200 UTC 1 September.
Gaston was strengthening up until landfall, and was operationally assessed to be a strong tropical storm when it crossed the coast.
Gaston produced very heavy rains and flash floods as it moved through southeastern Virginia on 30 August, with the most severe conditions in the Richmond metropolitan area.
