Gaston is a city located in Washington County, Oregon. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 600.


Geography

Gaston is located at 45°26'11" North, 123°8'29" West (45.436337, -123.141501)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²). 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 600 people, 196 households, and 139 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,053.0/km² (2,691.7/mi²). There are 204 housing units at an average density of 358.0/km² (915.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 88.33% White, 0.00% African American, 0.83% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 7.00% from other races, and 3.67% from two or more races. 14.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 196 households out of which 44.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% are married couples living together, 14.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% are non-families. 25.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.06 and the average family size is 3.73.


In the city the population is spread out with 37.7% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 4.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 104.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.8 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $36,458, and the median income for a family is $42,031. Males have a median income of $31,641 versus $25,833 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,758. 11.1% of the population and 9.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.3% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

aston was named for Joseph Gaston, who immigrated to Oregon from Ohio in 1862 and actively promoted the west-side railroad southwest of Portland, which was later built by Holladay and Villard.
He built the narrow-gauge line from Dayton to Sheridan in 1878 and subsequently wrote and published histories of Portland and of Oregon.
The following recreational areas are within 100 miles of the city: Oregon Coast, Columbia River, Nestucca River and the Wilson River.
