One of the main objectives of the Gateway road and bridge improvements is to reduce congestion-related idling on the Port Mann Bridge and Highway 1 which contributes to poor air quality.
The scope of the Gateway road and bridge improvements is still being developed; however it is anticipated that improvements to existing Highway 1 interchanges in particular, would help relieve highway queues that often spill onto connecting municipal roads.
The Gateway Program is (in addition to other regional road and transit projects) being implemented over the next 10 years and is an important piece of a comprehensive, effective transportation network that addresses congestion, supports economic activity, increases transit and transportation choice and provides better inter-municipal connections.
