Encyclopedia > Gateway Mall

The Gateway District is a large open air retail, residential and office complex in Salt Lake City, Utah. The complex is centered around the historic Union Pacific Depot in downtown Salt Lake.

The Gateway began as part of Salt Lake City's urban redevelopment project, and the first phase was completed prior to the 2002 Winter Olympics. The first phase included 2.1 million ft² of mixed-use development including the Gateway Mall, office complexes, condominiums and three blocks devoted to the renovated Depot. Other highlights include the Clark Planetarium and the Living Earth Aquarium.

Mesa fears a 'Gateway Super Mall' may hurt pursuit of business park (418 words)
"Gateway Super Regional Mall" is planned for farmland at the northwestern corner of Elliot Road and Loop 202 by NKS III, a limited partnership, but city officials already are skeptical after reviewing a preliminary application for zoning changes.
Ralph Pew, a zoning attorney representing the partnership, cautioned that the mall is in a preliminary planning stage and that he has met with city planners to discuss their concerns.
A regional mall is designed to attract customers from at least a four- or five-mile radius, but planners said the mall would appear to fall within the area of other malls.
