It bypasses Brisbane in order to provide easier access between the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. The Gateway Motorway is currently being upgraded to 6 lanes from Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Road to Wynnum Road and 8 Lanes from Wynnum Road to the Gateway Bridge. The Gateway Bridge crossing will be upgraded to 12 lanes by building a duplicate bridge immediately downstream to the existing structure. North of the bridge the motorway will be routed further east from its current placement and will include an additional access road to Brisbane Airport. Manual toll booths will be removed and replaced with full electronic tags for all vehicles crossing the new bridge - and refurbished original Gateway Bridge.

In addition to the above, there are plans to 6-lane the southern section of the motorway (Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Rd to Pacific Motorway) as part of the M1-Upgrade (currently under proposal).
