Gaucin, pronounced 'gau-than', is a small village in the mountains of the Andalusia region of SW Spain, inland from coastal towns such as Marbella, Puerto Benous and Estepona. It is known for its spectacular views of the surrounding mountain scenery and has been the inspiration for a number of artists and writers. The village is reached with an 18km climb up a rather bumpy mountain road, but this proves to be only a small sacrifice once one reaches the town itself. Within Gaucin many tourists choose to visit the historic castle and walks are also available to really take advantage of some of the most breath-taking scenery on the European continent. There are rentals on holiday homes available for those wishing to use Gaucin as a base and for this purpose it proves remarkabley convenient - being close to those port towns mentioned earlier and the capital of the region, Ronda. The hotels of choice would be 'Hotel Casablanca' and 'La Frusctosa'; both of which provide exquisite cuisine in very pleasant surroundings. For authentic Spanish 'tapas', 'Bar Paco Pepe' is brilliant and sitting outside the bar of a summer's evening by one of Gaucin's large fountains is a real pleasure. Note; avoid the restaurant 'Martin's' which serves sub-standard ready-prepared frozen meals. One final ditty for English tourists is the small but noteable ex-pat prescence of the rather more pleasant variety than one might find elsewhere in Spain!
