She was reportedly inspired to dance by watching a performance of Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev. She joined the American Ballet Theatre after meeting Mikhail Baryshnikov, who would become her perennial partner. She was practicing when she received a phone call from Baryshnikov's entourage asking her if she would like to dance with him and accepted. In 1986, Kirkland, with Greg Lawrence, published Dancing on My Grave, a tell-all autobiography detailing her struggles with eating disorders and drug addiction. The book also sharply criticizes George Balanchine and speaks about many of her partnerships, both on stage and off, with some of the most famous dancers of the time, including Baryshnikov, Peter Martins, Ivan Nagy, Anthony Dowell, Patrick Bissell, Peter Schafuss, and Stephen Jeffries. Following Dancing on My Grave, Kirkland and Lawrence published The Shape of Love: The Story of 'Dancing on My Grave' Continues in 1990, which focuses on Kirkland's return to the stage in 1986. She and her ex-husband collaborated on one more book, "Little Ballerina and Her Dancing Horse," for children in 1994. Kirkland is cursed with the fatal possession of an active artistic mind and a drive for perfection.
In light of the pressures Kirkland faced as a ballerina, complicated by insecurities in her personal life, her path of self-destruction is not surprising.
As a more confident and mature Gelsey Kirkland prepares for her comeback, she has forced us to see that she is one of the lucky few to survive the dance with dignity.

Gelsey Kirkland was born to father Jack, a playwright, and Nancy, an actress, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.  She also had an older sister, Johnna, the favourite.  This favouritism, in addition to her demanding and alcoholic father, in addition to her own perfectionism would lead to problems in the future.
Baryshnikov asked her to be his partner, so in September of 1974 Gelsey Kirkland left the New York City Ballet and joined the American Ballet Theatre as a principal dancer opposite Mikhail Baryshnikov.
So successful was her return to the stage that Miss Kirkland was asked to do a Command Performance in 1986 for Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II with the Royal Ballet, which she did brilliantly.
