In the past, Gemlik was one of the richest towns in the Mediterranean, because of the ancient silk road which ended close to the place of the modern Container Port (Gemport). The old harbour and the ancient city can't be seen today. There are only some cyclon walls and tunnels of the old Kios left.

Kios (Gemlik) has been established by a Greek commander who was returning from the war in 1390 B.C and this location has been named as Styits.
