Green was born in Houston, Texas and he graduated from the University of Houston. He was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1972. Green rose to the Texas State Senate in 1985 and to the U.S. House in 1992. He has a moderate voting record in the House. Despite the woes that redistricting has given other Texas Democrats, Green won reelection without a Republican opponent in 2004. He currently represented the 29th Texas Congressional district, (map (http://nationalatlas.gov/printable/images/preview/congdist/tx29_109.gif)), which comprises part of Houston and some of its suburbs to the east and north.
