Escobedo is one of the fastest-growing cities in Nuevo León. It has been settled for over 400 years. The land was originally known as "Los Llanos del Topo" (Hills of the Topo). The first owner of these lands was Captain José de Treviño, who was granted the territory on April 25, 1604 by Gov. Diego de Montemayor. Although Treviño was the original owner, the city itself was established by his son José de Ayala with the "Hacienda del Topo de San Nicolas Tolentino" by the time known as "Topo de los Ayala" or "Topo Grande", not to be confused with "Topo de los Gonzalez" or "Topo Chico". The population in year 2000 in General Escobedo was 233,457 people, 117,713 men and 115,744 women. It was the 5th most populated city in the state, representing 6.09% of the total population.

Escobedo was in charge of a string of pack mules belonging to his father when the war with the United States began; and when General Zachary Taylor marched against Mexico, crossing the River Nueces, Escobedo converted his muleteers into partisans, and attacked the American forces wherever he could meet them in small bodies.
Escobedo's forces were rapidly augmenting by the enrolment of the dispersed republicans, and in March 1866, he was able to begin offensive operations toward the interior.
Escobedo was appointed general-in-chief of the army of the north; and as the French troops retired from the northern states in their march of concentration toward Vera Cruz, Escobedo captured the principal cities successively from the remaining imperial forces.

Escobedo's political ideas were inclined towards the Liberal party; he fought against the dictatorship of General Santa Anna and in 1855 he joined the Plan of Ayutla, which would depose the latter.
Meanwhile Escobedo in his camp, was not yet aware that the convent had already been taken and was impatient for the lack of news; he directed himself towards La Cruz, and when he entered the cemmetery he was informed by lieutenant colonel Agustín Lozano that the convent was already under the repiublicans' control.
Escobedo mentions in his Report another interview he had with Maximilian on May 28 in the Emperor's prisson; this visit was made spontaneosly by Escobedo himself.
