General Hospital was a British daytime soap opera which ran on ITV from 1972 to 1979, modeled after the American series of the same name.

Probably the best-known of its stars was Tony Adams, who later played a leading role in Crossroads. Others who appeared in the soap at one time or another included Lynda Bellingham, Barbara Kellerman, Judy Loe and Kathleen Byron.

British Television (4173 words)
Third, all advertising-financed television is under the jurisdiction of the Independent Television Commission (known in previous incarnations as the Independent Broadcasting Authority and the Independent Television Authority).
Television finance is becoming much tighter, as production costs escalate (responding to competition for top performers, programs and sporting events) beyond the general inflation rate.
In this period, all British broadcasters have had to adjust to a new and less supportive political mood--one that regards television more as an industry than a cultural agency and its institutions as badly in need of a shake-up.
General Hospital - History (1599 words)
The first stories were mainly set at a general hospital in Port Charles, a fictional New York town, and revolved around manly doctor Steve Hardy (John Beradino) and his nurse Jessie Brewer (Emily McLaughlin).
Steve was chief of Internal Medicine on the hospital's seventh floor and dedicated his life to healing and caring for the sick, ably assisted by Nurse Jessie.
In this storyline Audrey was accused of murdering her son's babysitter and General Hospital was briefly elevated to the number one position, beating long time ratings giant As the World Turns.
