Genoa Cricket And Football Club was founded on september, 1893 by some British citizens who lived in Columbus' homeland, as a private club. It opened to the italians in 1897. The team is the oldest of Italy, its colours are the red and the blue. During the first decades of the 20th century, Genoa (called "Zena" by its fans)won several italian football championships and a national cup (named Coppa Italia); the final amount of that triumphal period says 9 scudetti (Italian championships) and 1 Italy Cup won. The legendary coach of Genoa in the 20s and 30s was mr. William Garbutt, a british trainer who was a myth of italian football before World War Two; great players of that golden age were Levratto, De PrĂ , De Vecchi, Ottavio Barbieri. After the war, Genoa started its decline, marked by some retrocessions to Serie B from Serie A and a retrocession to Serie C on 1970. However, the infinite passion of Genoa fans helped the red and blue team to survive to its decay, and Genoa has always been able to revive, becoming a "living legend" of Italian football. In 1992 Genoa was the first italian team in the history able to win at legendary Liverpool's Anfield Road, for the Uefa Cup Quarters of Final. In 1995 Genoa retrocessed from serie A after a dramatic match versus Padova. Since that day, Genoa is away from Serie A: recently, new owner Enrico Preziosi built a great team that dominated Serie B (2004-05) and bought many important italian players (the goalkeeper Abbiati from Milan, the left wing Alessandro Parisi, etc.) to lead Genoa to the qualification to a european cup. Unfortunely, last summer Genoa was involved in a case of illegal bets, and the italian sports justice sentenced that Genoa had arranged the last match of the season versus Venezia: it was sent to Serie C, directly from Serie A. Actually, that sentence is not very clear, and many journalists assert that it was the product of economic interests; Genoa sued the italian football association to obtain a compensation because of the economic damages of the retrocession.
