Geoffrey Orbell was a keen tramper/bush walker. taking time out his 1948 practice of an Invercargil dentist. Accompanying his brother, he was familar with the Northwestern arms of Lake TeAnau, Southland NZ. On one of his trips he saw the footmarks, unfamilar to him, of a large waterbird. Knowing of the believed extinction of the Takahe Notornis, a large flightless rail related to the Swamp Hen/Pukeko, he rediscovered the species in a remote valley of the Murchison Mountains adjacent to Lake TeAnau. In latter years he retired to live in Mosgiel, near Dunedin, New Zealand. Dunedin (ÅŒtepoti in Maori) is the second-largest city in the South Island of New Zealand, located in coastal Otago. ...
