After the war, South Korea went through several political turmoils: the autocratic government of Syngman Rhee was thrown out of power by student uprising and a brief period of civil rule was established in 1960.
Korea forms a peninsula that extends some 1,100 km from the Asian mainland, flanked by the Yellow Sea (West Sea) to the west and the Sea of Japan (East Sea) to the east, and terminated by the Korea Strait and the East China Sea to the south.
Korea's population is one of the most ethnically and linguistically homogeneous in the world, with the only significant minority being a small Chinese community.
