Sir George Abraham Grierson (7 January 1851, Glenageary, County Dublin, Ireland - 9 March 1941, Camberley, County Dublin, Ireland, United Kingdom) was a famous British civil servant who spent much of his life in British India. He joined the Indian Civil Service in 1873 and was in charge of the Linguistic Survey of India from 1898. He was responsible for producing the monumental Linguistic Survey of India, an important work in the history of sociolinguistics research in India which took 30 years to complete nd whose results were published in 11 volumes between 1903-1928.[1] He was a Fellow of the British Academy and member of several Asiatic, Oriental and linguistic societies. He wrote the grammar of Maithili among various other Indian languages. Against this theory must be set the fact that George Grierson of Dublin had a sister Jane Grierson, married in 1718, who is not mentioned in the Testament Dative of George Grierson of Edinburgh.
