It was around the time Dawes arrived in Liverpool that he became interested in astronomy and in particular the study of binary stars.
Dawes improved on Sir John's own double star work by introducing refinements to his telescope, a 3.8 inch Dolland refractor, and was able, as a result, to make more accurate observations of binaries.
Dawes new wife was wealthy and he was able to erect his own observatory and install a 6.5 inch Merz refractor.
Charlotte never married and arrived in Australia with her brother, George, in the "South Australian", 16/10/1872, at the ripe old age of 65.
A meeting and dinner being held at the DAWES TAVERN is recorded in the S.A. Register of the 25th Nov.1839, and as there were no other DAWES's recorded in S.A. at that time, it would be reasonable to assume that this may have been his first venture beyond his trade.
At this time, his brother George had bought land in Hindmarsh, which was sold late in July 1853, so it could be assumed that he was the nominator and bought the land for that purpose.
