George Engel (1836 Cassel, Germany - November 11, 1887) was an anarchist and labor union activist executed after the Haymarket riot, along with Albert Parsons, August Spies, and Adolph Fischer. He left Germany in 1872 arriving first in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in January 1873 where he worked in a factory in which he became aquainted with socialism. In 1878 he left Philadelphia and moved to Chicago, Illinois and joined the just forming International Working People's Association. The Growh of George Engel's Biopsychosocial Model (4632 words)
George’s first major project, which led to his first publication (in 1935, at age 21!), was a study of the distribution of organic phosphorus compounds in the muscles of marine invertebrates.
George served as an attending in the Department of Medicine and was responsible for a full range of medical patients, but he also undertook collaborative research in which he now explored in imaginative and open-ended ways the psychological as well as the medical dimensions of his clinical cases.
Engel and Reichsman were especially struck by Monica’s characteristic reactions in the presence of new experimenters (“strangers”) in stark contrast to her reactions in the presence of her favorite, familiar one (Reichsman).

George Engel, a native of New York City, officially retired in 1979, but remained active at SMD as professor emeritus.
In addition to his son, Peter, Engel is survived by a daughter, Betty Engel, of San Diego and two grandchildren.
