He had not considered acting until he met the actor Dudley Sutton by chance in a pub. Dudley recommended that Sewell audition for a production by Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop of Fings Ain't Wot They Used To Be in the West End. Sewell did so, and made his acting debut at the age of 35. He went on to star in two more productions, which later went to Paris and Broadway. The experience garnered from stage acting led to a long career in both film and television. Sewell is most noted for one of his more recent roles in The Detectives, where he played superintendent Frank Cottam, a send up of his character in the Euston Films drama "Special Branch". He is also known for his role as Colonel Alec Freeman in the science fiction series, UFO. He appeared in the popular 1971 film Get Carter; and in Doctor Who in 1988. Sewell also established himself as a leading critic of the Toronto Police, demanding greater accountability to the public, and was a leading defender of gay rights, endorsing gay rights activist George Hislop's 1980 candidacy for city council, at a time when it was rare for public figures to express support for same-sex rights.
Sewell served as chair of the Toronto public housing authority from 1986 to 1988 and is an acknowledged urban affairs expert.
Sewell was an advisor to East London, South Africa's city council from 1994 to 1999 and as advisor on the re-establishment of local government in Malawi in 2000.

George was born in 1782 at Beverley, Yorkshire.
George was "...not one of your namby pamby hanky bread pinchers, he was a desperate housebreaker." The Judge summed up that they had committed the supreme crime of the property-valuing Age of Enlightenment and therefore deserved the death sentence, which was also imposed on many other prisoners tried that day.
George died in Sydney on 13 October 1837 aged 55 and he was buried in the family grave at the Sandhills Cemetery.
