The George Van Biesbroeck Prize is awarded annually, honoring a living individual for a long-term achievement in the field of astronomy, typically far beyond the requirements of an awardee's paid position. The American Astronomical Society assumed responsibility for the Van Biesbroeck Prize in 1997. The prize is named after George Van Biesbroeck.

George Van Biesbroeck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (242 words)
George A. Van Biesbroeck (or Georges-Achille Van Biesbroeck) (January 21, 1880 – February 23, 1974) was a Belgian-American astronomer.
The asteroid 1781 Van Biesbroeck is named after him, as are Van Biesbroeck crater on the Moon and the red dwarf Van Briesboeck's Star (Wolf 1055 AB).
The George Van Biesbroeck Prize, awarded by the American Astronomical Society, is named in his honor as well.
AAS Prizes and Awards (1100 words)
The prize recipient shall be invited to present a paper on the subject for which the prize was granted at a meeting designated by the Council.
The Van Biesbroeck prize is normally awarded every two years, honors a living individual for long-term extraordinary or unselfish service to astronomy, often beyond the requirements of his or her paid position.
The AAS Education Prize is to recognize outstanding contributions to the education of the public, students and/or the next generation of professional astronomers.
