George Washington McCrary (August 29, 1835 - June 23, 1890) was a Congressman from Iowa and a United States Secretary of War. He was a member of the United States Republican Party.


McCrary was born near Evansville, Indiana in 1835. Later, he moved with his parents to Iowa territory.


He was a member of Iowa state house of representatives in 1857. Then he was a member of Iowa state senate between 1861 and 1865. He served as a U.S. Representative from Iowa, 1st District between 1869 and 1977. He served as the Secretary of War under President Rutherford B. Hayes between 1877 and 1879, when he resigned. He was later a Judge of U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit between 1880 and 1884. He died in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1890.

George Washington McCrary was a congressman from Iowa from 1869 to 1877, the secretary of war under Hayes who removed federal troops from South Carolina and Louisiana, and a federal judge of the eighth judicial circuit.
While in Congress, he served as chairman of the committee on elections and then published "A Treatise on the American Law of Elections." McCrary also published all the cases tried before his federal court.
