History

White settlement began on September 16, 1851, when Luther Collins staked his claim. It was named by Julius Horton after his son in 1890. The original Rainier Brewery, once reportedly the sixth-largest brewery in the world, began operations in 1882. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the red brick brewery dominates the commercial district along Airport Way S.
