Born in Ghana, Asamoah and his family emigrated to Germany in 1990. He played for Hannover 96 before moving to FC Schalke 04 in 1999. He made his debut for Germany in 2001 against Slovakia, the first black player to ever play for the side (however, with Erwin Kostedde and Jimmy Hartwig, there were two previous German internationals who had one black and one white parent). Asamoah moved to Schalke in the summer of 1999 where he established himself as a regular in Rudi Assauer's side.
Gerald joined him eight years later and says his earliest memories of Germany were of refusing to get out of his father's car to face the cold November weather.
Asamoah himself insists he does not want to appear as a "fl saviour" but he is keen to change attitudes in Germany.
