Maria Geraldine Smith (born 29 August 1961 , Belfast ) is a politician in the United Kingdom . She has been Labour member of Parliament for Morecambe and Lunesdale since 1997 . A former pupil of Morecambe High School, her first campaign was supported by the Communication Workers Union , for whom she was formerly an officer. Geraldine also used much of the information and many of the ideas from the family literacy parent group to persuade one of her sons that he had the ability to make a better life for himself.
