2006 Presidential Election

On March 14, 2006, PSDB nominated Alckmin as its candidate to Brazilian presidency. Because of electoral rules, no candidate running for office may currently be in an executive office, forcing him to resign the governorship on March 31, 2006. Cláudio Lembo, the lieutenant governor, will finish Alckmin's term. Alckmin's party mate, José Serra, the PSDB's presidential standard-bearer who lost to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2002, announced his candidacy to replace Alckmin in the 2006 gubernatorial elections. Serra won the vote in Brazil's first round elections on October 1, 2006 and will be the next governor of São Paulo. Contrary to all major polls taken in the run-up to the October 1, 2006 balloting, Alckmin surprised almost everyone and came in second place in the presidential election. His 41.64% of the vote [1], along with votes cast for two, less significant candidates, as well as ballots that were left blank or spoiled, was enough to deny the simple majority necessary to re-elect incumbent President Lula in the first electoral round. Lula and Alckmin will face one another in a run-off election on October 29, 2006. A simple majority is the most common requirement in voting for a measure to pass, especially in deliberative bodies and small organizations. ... Brazil's Lula Re-elected by Landslide (749 words)
A leftist who has toned down his once-fiery rhetoric and maintained orthodox economic policies, Lula was buoyed by a healthy, if slow-growing, economy, with inflation down, trade at a record high and a large chunk of public debt paid off ahead of time.
Alckmin, 53, an anesthesiologist backed by the business community, had not called for any major policy changes, focusing instead on a series of scandals that led to the resignation of several of Lula's ministers and top PT officials.
Alckmin's Party of the Brazilian Social Democracy (PSDB) will have 66 deputies and 14 senators, with the remaining seats going to other parties.
The Raw Story | Geraldo Alckmin, the stone in Lula's shoe (372 words)
Alckmin has staunchly denied being a member of the conservative Catholic organization Opus Dei, but always carries close to him its book "The Way." The opposition and the media alike have underlined his links to Opus Dei, including his efforts to rename a street after its founder, Josemaria Escriva.
Alckmin, one of the founders of the Party of Brazilian Social Democracy (PSDB), has promised to return the country to the path of ethics and to subject his countrymen to fewer taxes.
The devout Alckmin, however, needs close to a miracle to get to be inaugurated as Brazilian president on January 1, and at least a little divine help to force Lula to compete in a run-off election.
