The coast guard of Germany (German: Koordinierungsverbund Küstenwache) is an association of a number of federal agencies. It is not a single entity, like the coast guards of other countries, for instance the United States Coast Guard. Its prime tasks are border protection, maritime environmental protection, shipping safety, fishery protection and customs enforcement. Camp Edwards Army National Guard Training Site (2186 words)
The East Coast Processing Center was established in October 1943 and represents the first such facility on the East Coast of the U.S. The Center housed men who had gone AWOL at the time their units were shipped overseas - most men stayed for a month before being shipped out to Europe or the Pacific.
German prisoners also assisted in salvaging millions of board feet of lumber after the Otis vicinity was devastated by a hurricane in September 1944.
