Championship trophies now and then - the "Viktoria" (1903-1944) and the "Championship Plate" (since 1949)

The coronation of the first Champions in imperial Germany in 1903 established the tradition of a great footballing nation. Image File history File links MeisterPokale. ...

Since 1903 93 championships have been decided: 49 clubs share the honour of having been amongst the nations top two teams. Only 28 clubs reached the ultimate pinnacle and got to call themselves Meister (champion).

From 1903 to 1944, the teams played for the "Viktoria" donated by Crown Prince Wilhelm of Prussia. The trophy was originally intended to be awarded on an annual alternating basis to the championship teams of the German Football Association and the nation's rugby teams. Football soon became the more dominant sport and the trophy stayed with the game with the spherically round ball. The coat of arms of the Kingdom of Prussia, 1701-1918 The word Prussia (Old Prussian: PrÅ«sa, German: Preußen, Polish: Prusy, Lithuanian: PrÅ«sai, Latin: Borussia) has had various (often contradictory) meanings: The land of the Baltic Prussians (in what is now parts of southern Lithuania, the Kaliningrad... In the confusion at the end of World War II, the trophy disappeared. It was re-discovered decades later in an East German bank safe-deposit box where it had been placed by a Dresden supporter for safekeeping. It has since been returned to the German association. In the meantime, a new championship trophy, the Meisterschale ("Championship Plate"), was created in 1949. 1.FC Nürnberg, the first post-war champions had to make do with a pennant, in the frugal spirit of the times Dresdner SC is a German football club playing in Dresden, Saxony and was founded on April 30, 1898. ... Before the introduction of the Bundesliga the Championship was decided in a following play-off in which the leading clubs (between 1949-1963 the first two of the five Oberliga's) took part. The championship in 1948 was actually still an all German championship (ie, East and West), but the East German Champions SG Planitz were not allowed by their administration to take part in the play-offs.

Zone Champions after World War II

After WWII Germany was divided into four occupation zones. Championships based on the division by those zones were held in the first three years. In the third year the play-offs for a national title were held. Champions and the runners-up were qualified to participate, with the exception of the Soviet Zone and Berlin, where only the champions were admitted. The administration of the Soviet Zone did not allow Planitz to take part.
