The Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (in English: Society for the Friends of Music) was founded in 1812 by Joseph von Sonnleithner, the Secretary for Court Theatre in Vienna. Its official charter, drafted in 1814, states that the purpose of the Society was to promote music in all its facets. In 1869, the Jewish Russian composer Anton Rubinstein was appointed as director of the concerts. His tenure was short-lived. His successor was Johannes Brahms.
