This song was designed as an answer to the latest dance craze, "The Duck". The song made it to number #1 on the US R&B charts, but only #29 on the pop charts. When Whitfield's "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" (also a #1 R&B hit) made it to #13 on the pop charts, Whitfield became the Temptations' new main producer.

The band decided to reinterpret "Get Ready," which had been a Top 30 hit for the Temptations in 1966.
By far, the most popular cut for air play was the long version of "Get Ready." Reversing the usual procedure, the hit album spawned a hit 45 -- a cut-down version of the song -- which took off in mid-March.
By June, it was one of the best-selling pop singles in the country, and was getting R&B play as well.
