Ghorwane is a Mozambican marrabenta band. It was founded in 1983. The band got its name after the lake of the same name in the province of Gaza. Ghorwane's music is sung in local languages like Shangaan. The band's composer and saxophonist, Jose "Zeca" Alage, got killed in 1993. Marrabenta is a form of Mozambican dance music. ... World Music Features Ghorwane World Music at Global Rhythm - The Destination for World Music (1013 words)
Even though Ghorwane is an urban band, the group members stay close to their roots, which draw from the rhythms and languages of the ethnicities in Mozambique.
During the 80s, Ghorwane was known for its sharp political commentary, and state police regularly attended the band’s concerts to monitor the lyrics.
Then Ghorwane’s saxophone player, Jose “Zeca” Alage, was killed shortly before their European tour.

In 1986 Ghorwane recorded a number of songs amongst which "Massotcha" written by Zeca Alage, which spoke about the horror of war and the danger of the military to the people they meant to be protecting.
Ghorwane made the recordings of their second CD Kudumba in 1996 which was released in 1997 by Piranha.
Even though the war is over Ghorwane have not stopped their political and social criticism concerning developments in their country and the influence of the foreign countries and organizations in aid programs.
