Editing help is available. This article has been tagged since September 2006. The Ghost Bat (Macroderma gigas) is a bat endemic to Australia. It gets its name from the extremely thin skin on its wings that makes it appear somewhat ghostly at night. It has grey fur on its back and pale grey fur on its belly. The Ghost Bat has long, narrow wings and no tail. It has an average length of 11cm (10-25cm), although females are smaller than the males. The conservation status of a species is an indicator of the likelihood of that species continuing to survive. ...

The Ghost Bat lives in caves and tunnels in mass numbers. It mainly consumes large insects, frogs, lizards and other small animals including other bats. The Ghost Bat is the only carnivorous bat in Australia. This species is considered to be vulnerable in the wild from destruction of caves for mining. It inhabits northern Australia from the east to the west coast. There are about 4000 to 6000 in the wild. Info about Ghost Bats Macrodemia Gigas, otherwise known as ghost bats, because of their extremely thin skin on their wings which give them a ghostly look at night, are a native australian animal in danger of extinction. Their habitat's are being demolished, their number's rapidly decreasing, but lucking they are protected by national parks and reserves. There are appoximately 4000-6000 ghost bats left in the wild. They inhabit caves in northern australia from the east to the west coast. They usually roost in col0onies, but because many of their roosting sites being destroyed it is rare that you will find large colonies. The biggest reason these ghost bats are on the brink of extinction is because these unique bats are being killed and blown up by miners. Their rapid decrease is also caused by loss of feeding habitat and by clearinf and land degradation for agricultural uses. In 1988, a disturbing slaughter of ghost bats was caused by gold miners blowing up a cave with one of the biggest colonies of ghost bats residing within it. Ghost bat females only have one baby per year, and if miners continue to carelessly blow up tha habitats of ghot bats, they will become extinct very soon. Ghost bats roost in caves, old mines, tunnels, and deep cracks in rocks. They roost in large colonies, and most of the larger colonies are found in miner's tunnels. and for the purpose of finding gold and jewels, these vunerable adorable bats are being blown up without second thought and if this kind of behaviour continues, within a couple of years, ghost bats will become extinct. The BCI (Bats conservation international) have created national parks and reserves around northern australia to try and increase the number of bats. They have created special breeding programs and have been attempting to clone species of bats overseas. If tests are successful overseas the the BCI has allowed the cloning of Ghost Bats in Australia, to try and increase the number of these unique adorable bats and get the out of the list of vulnerable species. Ghost bats are the only carnivorous bat in australia, and are a very special part of australia. If people let these bats go extinct, a part of the country will be lost. It cant be let to let Ghost bats go like the tasmanian tiger. Miners should not be let to blow up mines with these special bats in them, and if miners are found doing so, there should be more serious consequences than there are now.
