Hawes and Wilson, along with other team members who belong to the group they founded, The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS), investigate locations of interest by using electronic equipment which they feel is capable of detecting paranormal activity. TAPS's equipment includes digital thermometers, EMF (electromagnetic field) scanners, infrared and night vision cameras, handheld digital video cameras, digital audio recorders, and laptop computers. Other gear not shown on screen are an Ion Generator — a device that charges the air with electricity and theorized to help spirits manifest, and the White Noise Generator — an audio device that creates a static background noise and theorized to act as a catalyst for assisting entities in creating EVPs.[1] The team has also experimented, in at least one episode, with a geiger counter during their investigation to see if it would register any anomalous readings. When investigating a location, TAPS team members first survey the property with its owners, who describe their experiences at the site. Next, the team sets up electronic equipment in the apparent paranormal "hot spots." The TAPS team then spends several hours taking EMF and temperature readings, recording audio for EVP, and filming with digital video cameras. Many times, they will even try to verbally coax the "ghosts" into responding, while recording. Afterwards, the team spends several hours analyzing all of the data for signs of possible paranormal activity.

A few days after reviewing the information, Hawes and Wilson discuss their findings with the location site owners, offer suggestions for dealing with any apparent activity, and answer any questions the owners may have.

Since the show began airing, TAPS has recorded thousands of hours of audio and video data. Most investigations, according to TAPS, turn up cold with very little, if any, paranormal activity occurring. The ghost hunters claim to have several good recordings of strange mists, odd lights, moving objects, and shadowy figures that manifest before the camera and disappear quickly - all highlighted at the end of the show.

TAPS does not believe every piece of evidence gathered is proof of the paranormal. To lend credibility to their investigations, the team tries to debunk what they find and look for reasonable explanations for things such as "cold spots" (that may be drafty windows), "moving objects" (that may have been accidentally bumped or tugged), "phantom lights" (that may be reflections of light from a passing vehicle), and "strange noises" (that may be a thumping branch or vermin in the walls). Paranormal is an umbrella term used to describe a wide variety of reported anomalous phenomena. ... A debunker is a skeptic who pursues dispelling false and unscientific claims. ...

In addition to the investigative aspect, the show highlights personal conflicts and relationships among members of the TAPS team, which may be why the SciFi network categorizes the show as a docu-soap. In earlier episodes, part of the hour showed Jason and Grant during their plumbing job or personal lives but that has diminished since then. Docu-soap In many reality television shows, the viewer and the camera are passive observers following people going about their daily personal and professional activities; this style of filming is often referred to as fly on the wall or cinéma vérité. Success and growth

Ghost Hunters has garnered some of the highest ratings of any Sci-Fi Channel network programming.[2] From the start, the show has found an audience for its mix of paranormal investigation and interpersonal drama.

In the early shows, TAPS was headquartered in a trailer located behind Jason Hawes's house. Within one season, they had moved the entire operation to a storefront in downtown Warwick, RI, and acquired several new TAPS vehicles equipped with surveillance instrumentation. Warwick is a city in Kent County, Rhode Island, United States. ...

In addition to their successful television venture, TAPS operates a website where they share their stories, photographs, and ghost hunting videos with an ever-growing membership list. Because of the popularity of the show, TAPS cast members have signed contracts with at least two talent agencies, Escape Artistry and GP Entertainment, to manage their appearances at lectures, conferences and public events. Ghost hunting is the process of investigating locations said to be haunted. ...

Criticism

Ghost Hunters has attracted various critics and skeptics. Some question the scientific validity of the investigations conducted by the TAPS team, its methodology, and particularly its use of instrumentation, as there is no scientifically-proven link between the existence of ghosts and (for example) cold spots or electromagnetic fields (which Hawes and Wilson say are not necessarily paranormal).[3] Of ghost hunting in general, skeptical investigator Joe Nickell says, "...the approach of the typical ghost hunter—a nonscientist using equipment for a purpose for which it was not made and has not been shown to be effective—is sheer pseudoscience".[4] Others contend that the show's claimed evidence of the paranormal could be easily hoaxed, since third party review of evidence collected by TAPS is not encouraged, and those who have contacted the group asking for full footage from everything recorded at the haunted locations have also gone unanswered. With each new season, critics of Ghost Hunters continue to publish skeptical analyses and theories on the Internet, often employing frame-by-frame analysis of episode footage which they believe debunks the show's findings.[5] Joe Nickell was born December 1, 1944 and is a prominent investigator of the paranormal. ... A typical 18th century phrenology chart. ...

On the Halloween 2007 live investigation, the show garnered more criticism on several websites (including SciFi's forums and Taps Revealed, when fans alleged that some parts of the show were staged or simply for shock value. Other fans were not pleased with the behavior of two TAPS investigators, Heather and Kristyn. Fans were largely displeased with their behavior towards Patrick Clark, who was one of three finalists in the search for a new TAPS member. Statements issued from the TAPS Family Manager, Brent Fair and his girlfriend, seemed to indicate little wrongdoing on the part of Heather and Kristyn. A post on Jason Hawes' Myspace page indicated that although the womens' attitudes could be taken as rude, TAPS continued to fully support them as part of their family. TAPS concerns seemed to be mainly centered around the contestant's attitude and his motives for becoming part of the TAPS family. A November 6, 2007 blog entry on Jason Hawes MySpace comments by Kristyn (now deleted along with Jason's original blog) indicated that she would not apologize for her Halloween behavior. MySpace is a social networking website offering an interactive, user-submitted network of friends, personal profiles, blogs, groups, photos, music, and videos. ...

Storylines

Like many reality shows, Ghost Hunters has developed some storylines which carry over from episode to episode.

  • Former investigator Brian Harnois is portrayed as an unreliable misfit who exasperates the other TAPS team members. He is often used as comic relief. After being spooked in episode 105 during an investigation of Eastern State Penitentiary, Harnois's catch phrase was created:
Dude, run!

The phrase was subsequently printed on caps and t-shirts sold by the group’s merchandising arm. Harnois's storyline climaxed when he resigned from TAPS in episode 207. In the 2005 Halloween Special episode, he rejoined the group after asking leader Jason Hawes for a second chance. The Eastern State Penitentiary is a former state prison in the United States. ... A catch phrase is a phrase or expression that is popularized, usually through repeated use, by a real person or fictional character. ...

  • Technical Manager Steve Gonsalves is portrayed as reliable and unflappable, despite several phobias including fear of heights, spiders, and air travel.
  • The relationship between group leaders Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson is characterized as personal as well as professional. The two are also portrayed as parental figures of the TAPS "family." In episode 101, they are seen discussing how to handle a team member's tardiness:
Wilson: "Why don't you try to show you have a sensitive side?"
Hawes: "Why don't you show you have a rugged side?"
  • Hawes's character is depicted variously as authoritarian alpha-male (nicknamed "The Ghostfather") and devoted but irascible "parent." Wilson's character is shown as the milder of the two, more apt to avoid conflict with team members and to express support for Hawes's decisions.
  • Other personalities on the TAPS team like newcomers Dustin Pari and Dave Tango are shown to contribute enthusiasm and occasional horseplay. In episode 213, Tango was apparently duped into wearing a rhinestone tiara during an investigation, while Pari is portrayed as technically knowledgable and eager to display his worth to the group. However, substantial storylines concerning these cast members have not been developed.
  • Hawes and Wilson often repeat their best advice to viewers who are unsure if they are experiencing paranormal activity:
When in doubt, get the hell out

Ghost Hunters: International

SciFi Channel recently greenlit a spinoff series titled "Ghost Hunters International" to air tentatively in January 2008. It would feature TAPS vets Robb Demarest, Andy Andrews, Brian Harnois, and Donna La Croix, along with Barry Fitzgerald (who appeared in the Ireland episodes of Ghost Hunters) and newcomer Shannon Sylvia (a member of New England Paranormal, which was founded by Steve Gonsalves). The format will be the same as Ghost Hunters but will feature locations around the world. Ghost Hunters International is a spin-off of the Sci Fi Channel series, Ghost Hunters. ... Confusions

  • Some people compare this show to the British paranormal investigation show Most Haunted. It should be noted that Most Haunted and Ghost Hunters are in no way related to each other. Yes, they are similar in the way that both shows investigate the paranormal, but Ghost Hunters is not a spin off of Most Haunted or related to Most Haunted in anyway. In any case, TAPS was created before Most Haunted even became a show.

Most Haunted is a British paranormal television programme based on investigating purported paranormal activity. ...
