The idea was confirmed by Aykroyd in an interview with CISN-FM in Edmonton, Alberta, but the status of the project as a film is unclear. History

Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis struggled for years to get started on a third Ghostbusters film, but they were unable to come up with a script with which they were satisfied. The possibility of a third film grew even more complicated as Bill Murray's interest in reprising his role waned over the years, and at one point Aykroyd felt that a third film would probably never happen. Aykroyd had written a working script, and Murray agreed to reprise a bit part, but Columbia would not get on board due to the cost.[citation needed] Harold Ramis (born November 21, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American actor, director, and writer. ... Since 1989, rumors of a third Ghostbusters movie have continued to appear, each with a shifting character/actor selection and a changing plot. Most of these involved a younger group of Ghostbusters made up of whoever in the current crop of comedy stars were the most popular (from Will Smith and Chris Farley to Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell), but these have been repeatedly debunked.[citation needed] 1989 (MCMLXXXIX) was a common year starting on Sunday of the Gregorian calendar. ... An IGN review of a screenplay draft dated 10 March, 1999 reveals the plot to Ghostbusters 3: Hellbent! to revolve around an overpopulation problem in Hell. Original Ghostbusters Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler (Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, respectively) oversee a crop of new, younger Ghostbusters as they deal with the Devil's (either Satan or Hades according to IGN) plan to send damned souls back to Earth as a way to control the growing population in Hell. For a period in the tail-end of the 1990s, there were persistent rumours that there was definite studio interest and that the new film would be released for the Millennium; however, it didn't come about. In a November 2005 interview with Ain't It Cool News, Harold Ramis spoke of the project. Ramis referred to the film as "the non-existent film" since it was, at that time, thought to be permanently on the shelf. Ramis confirmed that Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, and Chris Farley were originally intended to be cast as three of the new Ghostbusters. On February 2, 2007, Dan Aykroyd confirmed Ghostbusters III was still in development as an all-computer-generated feature film, which Aykroyd claimed would drastically lower the $150 million budget that Columbia balked at in 1999. In an interview on CISN, Aykroyd indicated the long-standing plot in which the Ghostbusters travel to a hellish version of New York was still in the works and that Bill Murray was still on board to reprise his role as Venkman. Ernie Hudson, as a response to fan emails, says he'd love to voice Winston's character again if given the chance. [3] Ernie Hudson Ernie Hudson (b. ...
