Although he was not an international conductor star, Gianandrea Gavazzeni was one of the most respected and dependable of opera conductors, considered one of the great preservers of the authentic Verdi tradition at La Scala.
He was also a composer, but renounced that career.
His Musicians of Europe (Musicisti d'Europe, Milan, 1954) was a notable summing up of the immediate post-War classical music scene, and biographical/musical studies of Bellini and Donizetti are also well respected.

Gianandrea Gavazzeni, a former artistic director of La Scala in Milan, died today at his home in northern Italy, his family said.
Gavazzeni, who had been ill for several months, began his career as a pianist and composer and wrote copiously for 20 years.
Gavazzeni is survived by several children and grandchildren.
