Giannitsa - History - Greece! (193 words)
The Iroo of Giannitsa, which is usually called the "Mavro Agalma" (Black Statue), is the work of the sculptor Grigorios Zevgolis and it was placed there in 1925 in memory of the liberation of the town from the Turks in 1912.
Its route in the plain of Giannitsa coincides with the place where the shallow and swampy lake of Giannitsa was situated, and which was drained approximately 70 years ago (1928-1932).
It concerns the region of the historic 'Swamp of Giannitsa' where the Greeks of Macedonia fought hard battles against the Bulgarian comitadji (1903-1908) for the freedom of Macedonia and whom Pinelopi Delta made immortal in the 'Secrets of the Swamp'.
