Gila Katsav was born in Tel Aviv, in the State of Israel, in 1948. In 1969 she married Moshe Katsav, who is currently serving as the President of the State of Israel. The couple has five children, four sons and a daughter, and two grandchildren.
Mrs. Katsav is involved in personal volunteer activity in homes for children who come from disadvantaged families as part of the efforts of “The Council for the Sheltered Child” and is a committed volunteer in the Rehabilitation Department of “Yad Sarah,” a voluntary organization that specializes in providing home care and lending medical equipment without charge.
Katsav supported the unsuccessful 2002 cease-fire plan between Israel and the Palestinians (rejected by then Prime Minister Ariel Sharon) and refused to pardon Yigal Amir, the assassin of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.
On April 8, 2005 Katsav sat near Iranian President Mohammad Khatami (born in the same city as Katsav) during the funeral of Pope John Paul II due to the fact that all world leaders present were arranged according to alphabetical order.
President Katsav would later claim that he shook Khameni's hand and spoke in Persian with both the President of Iran and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, during the funeral service's traditional "exchange of peace".
