Gilbert Bettman was an American politician of the Ohio Republican party.


In 1932, Bettman ran for the office of U.S. senator from Ohio. He lost to the incumbent Democrat, Robert J. Bulkley.


From January 1941 to July 1942, Bettman served as a justice of the Ohio Supreme Court.

Bettman's public life was a continuation of a tradition established by his father, Gilbert Bettman Sr., a Cincinnati City Council member, state attorney general and justice on the Ohio Supreme Court.
Instead Bettman found himself slogging through the Philippines, then served as a forward observer in the battle for control of Okinawa, directing artillery fire onto the ridge he and the Japanese army were sharing.
Attacked for overstepping his authority, Bettman issued a letter that outlined the legal framework for his actions, and said that as a citizen he felt he could not sit idly by.
