Encyclopedia > Gile Steele

The career of leading costume designer Gile Steele (1908 - 1952) was abruptly cut short when he died at the age of 43 in 1952. He started off at MGM in 1938 with one of his first assignments being the lavish Norma Shearer starring vehicle “Marie Antoinette”. He swiftly found himself working on many of the company’s prestige pictures including “Pride and Prejudice” and “Boom Town” (both 1940), “Blossoms in the Dust” and “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” (both 1941), “Mrs Miniver” (1942) and “Madame Curie” (1943). He was one of the first nominees when the category for Best Costume Design was introduced at the Academy Awards in 1948, picking up a nod for “The Emperor Waltz”. The next two years he was the recipient of the Oscar, first for William Wyler’s stark drama “The Heiress” in 1949 and then for Cecil B. deMille’s florid “Samson and Delilah” in 1950. Steele racked up three more nominations (“Kind Lady” in 1951, “The Great Caruso” in 1951, and “The Merry Widow” in 1952) before he died.
