Born in Gilead, Nebraska and educated at Colorado College, Presnell played for the NFL's Portsmouth Spartans, who later became the Detroit Lions, in the 1930s.
After playing in the NFL, Presnell was assistant football coach for the University of Kansas, then an assistant for the University of Nebraska and Eastern Kentucky University.
He was Head Coach at Nebraska in 1942 and Eastern Kentucky from 1954-1963.
