Gilmore is a town located in Crittenden County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 292.

Gilmore is located at 35°24'40" North, 90°16'39" West (35.411229, -90.277528)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 km˛ (0.2 mi˛). 0.6 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 292 people, 100 households, and 78 families residing in the town. The population density is 512.5/km˛ (1,306.1/mi˛). There are 114 housing units at an average density of 200.1/km˛ (509.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 19.86% White, 79.11% Black or African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 0.34% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 100 households out of which 38.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.0% are married couples living together, 31.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.0% are non-families. 22.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.92 and the average family size is 3.38.


In the town the population is spread out with 35.3% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 105.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.5 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $20,625, and the median income for a family is $22,031. Males have a median income of $29,375 versus $18,000 for females. The per capita income for the town is $8,867. 38.6% of the population and 29.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 52.2% of those under the age of 18 and 44.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

William I. Gilmore was born in Izard county, Arkansas, January 31, 1857, acquired a country school education in Parker county, Texas, and began his career in Young county with a horse and a cow and a calf.
Gilmore it has come to be one of the valuable and well improved farms of the county.
Gilmore was orphaned at an early age and died at the home she helped to build up December 22, 1901, leaving two children, Thomas B. and May.

In November 1999, Gary Gilmore, a professor in the Department of Health Education and Health Promotion at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and director of the university's community health programs, traveled to Calcutta, India, to begin his Fulbright lecturing assignment at the All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health.
Gilmore's wife, Elizabeth, a registered occupational therapist, accompanied him during his grant and volunteered full time at the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy.
Gilmore found that his Indian colleagues and students were receptive to discussing the emerging public health concerns of their country and eager to learn more about health promotion activities that have worked in other areas of the world.
